Savo Island

Unfortunately I haven't been to Savo Island (yet). Day trips to Savo can be booked from Honiara. You can walk up the volcano and the locals will cook eggs in the ground and light the sulphur in the air around some fissures. From what I have heard it is a long day with quite a big walk up the volcano
During the war, The Battle of Savo Island, also known as the First Battle of Savo Island and, in Japanese sources, as the First Battle of the Solomon Sea, took place 8-9 August 1942. It was a naval battle between the Imperial Japanese Navy and Allied naval forces. The battle was the first major naval engagement of the Guadalcanal campaign.
