Bonegi Sherman Tank (M3A3) To get to the tank you need to visit the gatehouse at Bonegi Beach and get a guide. The day I visited it cost me $SBD25. It is around 600 metres into the jungle from the road. You will need a 4x4 or a good set of shoes. The tank is a Sherman M3A3 and lies in a gully that used to be a target practice range - as can be seen by all the holes on the left hand side of the tank. There are dedications written on the tank but only one is easily readable - it says: In memory of the 147 Infantry and 3 Battalion at the Bonegi River I was told by the guide that the tank had been driven by a four star general as it has a symbol with a G and four stars on the back of the turrent. Unfortunately, it is not true. I wrote to a leading authority on Sherman tanks and he states that the symbol was used by General Steel Castings Corporation - it was cast in all thier steel armour castings.
