Honiara War Memorial

The Honiara War memorial is located in the centre of Honiara in the grounds of the Central Police Station. It has two memorials one for the Allies and the other for the Japanese. There are also two preserved artillery pieces. ANZAC day and other military anniversaries are held at this memorial every year.

The Allies memorial has a number of plaques but the main one says:
TO THE MEMORY
OF ALL WHO IN THE WORLD WAR OF 1939 - 1945
DEFENDED AND GUARDED
THE BRITISH SOLOMON ISLANDS PROTECTORATE
AND RESTED NOT
UNTIL THE LAST ENEMY WAS OVERCOME

The english part of the Japanese memorial says:
DURING 6 MONTHS SINCE THE END OF AUGUST OF 1942,
AT THE SOUTH FAR OUT FROM OUR FATHERLAND,
UNDER OFFENSIVE BY THE SUPERIOR ALLIED FORCES,
HAD NOT THE AMMUNITIONS FOR FIRING
ALSO HAD NOT THE RATIONS FOR EATING,
THERE WERE THE MISERY BEYOND THE LIMITATIONS AS COULD NOT SAY,
THOSE WHO DIES THE VICTIM:-
3,197 SOLDIERS OF KAWAGUCHI BRIGADE
WE DEDICATE THE MONUMENT OF REPOSE FOR THIER SOUL,
MAY SLEEP IN PEACEABLE.
