Visale
(Cape Esperance)

Visale is a great place for a swim or BBQ. It is about an hour west of Honiara along the Kukum Hwy. Once you see the big white Catholic Church on the right hand side you are there.
The church was founded in 1904 by the Catholic missionaries. Occupied by the Japanese, it was used as a radio station location by the Japanese Army. Bombed by Americans and destroyed. At one stage an American pilot dropped a 1,000lbs bomb through the roof of the mission. It was also destroyed in the fighting between the Japanese an Allied forces at the conclusion of the Guadalcanal campaign. It has since been rebuilt and is currently in use.
The Japanese also used the Cape Esperance area - Tambea and Visale for reinforcement landings and the final evacuation of Japanese troops on the 1, 4 and 7 February, 1943.
